CORE CARE
Well, if we could turn back time and keep our faithful companions from getting older, we would be a lot more popular than we are! We know what it is to worry about our pets as they get older, but there are a lot of things that we can do to support your aging pet. Schedule now to discuss options, such as senior screening lab work to monitor physiologic trends, supplemental and/or laser therapies, and the available medications. Let us help guide you through their senior care plans.

Many of our senior patients routinely come in every 6 months to keep current with the best recommendations and options for their changing needs. If your pet is on chronic medications, we will have you bring your pet every 6 months to make sure these therapies are the best option, continuing to be effective, and discuss screening modalities to make sure that the medications are working and continuing to be only beneficial without adverse side effects on the body. These are important discussions to have with your doctor, and we are happy to be available so you can be confident you are doing all that you can do to help keep your elderly companion in the best place they can be.

Geriatric pets, like humans, can face the challenge of heart disease. It is particularly common for senior dogs to experience congestive heart failure. This condition arises when the heart loses its ability to effectively pump blood, leading to fluid buildup in the heart, lungs, and chest cavity.
While dogs are more prone to heart disease, cats can still be affected by Feline Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy, which is relatively common. This condition leads to the thickening of a cat's heart walls, resulting in reduced cardiac efficiency.
Osteoarthritis can affect senior cats, not just older dogs. Although the symptoms in cats are more subtle than those in dogs, they can still experience a decrease in range of motion. Geriatric cats with osteoarthritis may show signs such as weight loss, loss of appetite, depression, changes in attitude and grooming habits, urinating or defecating outside the litter pan, and difficulty jumping on and off objects.
It can occur in older pets as a result of degeneration in their eyes and ears, causing varying degrees of deafness and blindness. This condition is more commonly observed among dogs than cats. As pets age, these issues may develop gradually, which allows elderly dogs to adapt their behavior while making it challenging for pet owners to identify the problem.
Senior cats may develop liver disease, which is often associated with high blood pressure or hyperthyroidism. This condition exhibits symptoms such as loss of appetite, jaundice, drooling, and increased thirst. Similarly, older dogs can experience liver issues that manifest as seizures, fever, abdominal fluid buildup, and more. If these symptoms occur in geriatric pets, immediate veterinary care becomes crucial. Moreover, aging pets commonly face a decline in kidney function due to factors like medication usage. Although chronic kidney disease cannot be cured outright, a combination of dietary adjustments and medications can effectively manage its progression.
Elderly cats and dogs often experience urinary tract conditions and incontinence. As their muscles controlling the bladder weaken, accidents can occur. However, it's important to note that incontinence may indicate larger health issues like urinary tract infections or dementia.
